Condo Insurance
Protect everything inside your walls.
What it is
Your association’s master policy usually stops at the building structure. A condo policy picks up where it ends, covering your unit’s interior, your belongings and your personal liability.
Every policy is different, and exact coverage depends on the insurance company and the options you choose. We’ll walk you through the details before you buy.
What we can help you cover
- Interior walls, fixtures and improvements you own
- Personal property such as furniture, electronics and clothing
- Liability if a guest is hurt or you damage a neighbor’s unit
- Loss assessment and additional living expenses after a covered loss
How condo insurance fits with your HOA policy
When you own a condo, two policies share the job. The association’s master policy covers the building and common areas. Your own condo policy, often called an HO-6, covers what the master policy leaves to you: usually some or all of the interior of your unit, your belongings and your personal liability.
How much of the interior is your responsibility depends on the master policy and your association’s governing documents. Some master policies cover the building down to the bare walls, others include original fixtures and finishes, and a few include improvements owners have made. We read the declarations and master policy summary with you so your coverage starts exactly where the association’s stops.
Raleigh condos and townhomes
From downtown and Glenwood South to North Hills and the condo communities along the Six Forks and Falls of Neuse corridors, Raleigh has a wide range of buildings, from older garden-style complexes to newer mid-rise towers. Older buildings may have aging plumbing, and in any stacked building a leak from the unit above can damage yours. Townhomes that are legally organized as condominiums need condo coverage, too, so it is worth confirming how yours is set up.
Coverages that matter most
Dwelling or building property coverage pays for the interior walls, cabinets, flooring and fixtures you are responsible for. Personal property covers your furniture, electronics and clothing. Liability helps if a guest is hurt in your unit or you accidentally damage a neighbor’s unit. Loss of use helps with temporary housing during covered repairs.
Loss assessment coverage is easy to overlook. If the association suffers a large loss or a liability claim beyond its own coverage or deductible, it may assess each owner a share. Loss assessment coverage can help pay your portion. Flood is excluded here too, so ground-floor units should ask about separate flood coverage.

Typically the parts of your unit the association’s master policy doesn’t, such as interior walls, fixtures and improvements, plus your belongings, personal liability, loss of use and loss assessment. Exact coverage depends on your master policy and the company you choose.
What is loss assessment coverage?
If your condo association charges owners a special assessment after a covered loss or liability claim that exceeds the master policy, loss assessment coverage can help pay your share, up to the limit you choose.
