Personal insurance
Renters Insurance
Affordable protection for what you own.
What it is
Your landlord’s policy covers the building, not your belongings. Renters insurance protects your things and your liability, usually for a modest premium.
Every policy is different, and exact coverage depends on the insurance company and the options you choose. We’ll walk you through the details before you buy.
What we can help you cover
- Personal property against theft, fire and other covered losses
- Liability if someone is hurt in your rental
- Additional living expenses if you are displaced
- What renters policies typically exclude
Why renters in Raleigh need their own policy
Your landlord’s insurance covers the building, not your things. If a fire, burst pipe or break-in damages your furniture, laptop, clothes or bike, the landlord’s policy generally won’t pay to replace them. Renters insurance does, and it is usually one of the least expensive policies a household can buy.
That applies whether you rent an apartment near downtown or Glenwood South, a townhome off Capital Boulevard, or a house near NC State or one of Raleigh’s other campuses. Many property managers also require renters insurance with a minimum amount of liability coverage as a condition of the lease.
What a renters policy includes
Personal property coverage pays to repair or replace your belongings after a covered loss, at home and often when they are away from home. Choosing replacement cost rather than actual cash value means you are paid closer to what it costs to buy new items, not their depreciated value.
Personal liability helps if a guest is injured in your unit or you accidentally cause damage to someone else’s property, such as an overflowing tub that leaks into the apartment below. Loss of use helps pay for a hotel and extra costs if a covered loss makes your place unlivable while it is repaired.
Gaps to know about
Like homeowners policies, renters policies exclude flood from rising water, so ground-floor and garden-level renters near creeks should ask about separate contents-only flood coverage. Expensive jewelry, cameras or musical instruments may need to be scheduled for full value. Roommates generally each need their own policy unless the company allows both names.
Renters insurance also pairs well with auto. Placing both with the same company can earn a multi-policy discount, and we can compare that against separate policies.
