What it is
Motorcycle insurance meets legal requirements and protects you, your bike and others on the road. Optional coverages help protect custom parts and gear.

What we can help you cover
- Liability coverage required to ride legally
- Collision and comprehensive for your motorcycle
- Uninsured motorist and medical payments options
- Coverage for custom parts, equipment and riding gear
North Carolina rules for riders
Motorcycles registered in North Carolina need the same liability insurance as cars. For policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, the minimum limits are 50/100/50, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is part of the policy as well.
North Carolina also has a universal helmet law, so every rider and passenger must wear a helmet that meets federal standards.
Coverage worth adding
Collision and comprehensive protect your own bike from crashes, theft, fire and falling limbs. Ask about coverage for riding gear and for custom parts and equipment, since chrome, exhausts and electronics can add up fast and may be limited unless you schedule them.
Medical payments coverage can help with your own injuries regardless of fault. Because riders are more exposed than drivers, we often recommend higher liability and UM/UIM limits than the state minimum.
Riding in the Triangle
From commuting on I-440 and I-540 to weekend rides out toward Falls Lake and the back roads of Franklin and Chatham counties, riders here put on real miles. Some companies offer lay-up or seasonal options and discounts for safety courses and multi-policy bundles. We compare them for you.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I add my motorcycle to my car insurance?
Some insurance companies write motorcycles on the same account or offer a multi-policy discount, but the bike is usually rated as its own policy. We compare both approaches.
Does motorcycle insurance cover my passenger?
Liability coverage may respond if you are at fault for a passenger’s injuries, and medical payments coverage can help too. Options vary, so we review passenger coverage with you.
What does Motorcycle Insurance typically cover?
Motorcycle insurance meets legal requirements and protects you, your bike and others on the road. Optional coverages help protect custom parts and gear. Exact limits, deductibles and exclusions depend on the policy and the insurance company, so we review the details with you before you buy.
Do you only insure people in Raleigh or North Carolina?
Our office is in North Raleigh, and we work with neighbors across the Triangle every day. As an independent agency we also help clients nationwide when we have markets that fit.
How do I get a quote for motorcycle coverage?
Start the quick quote form on this page, call or text our office, or request a quote online. An advisor reviews every request and follows up — usually within one business day.
Will you compare more than one insurance company?
Yes. Shadow Lake is an independent agency, so we shop multiple top-rated carriers for you instead of selling a single brand. Availability depends on the coverage, your location and underwriting.
Is flood damage included in a standard homeowners policy?
Usually not. Most homeowners and renters policies exclude flood. If you need flood coverage in North Carolina or elsewhere, we can help you look at separate flood options.
Can I bundle home and auto?
Often yes. Many households save time and may qualify for multi-policy discounts by placing home and auto with compatible carriers. We’ll tell you what options apply to your situation.
