Personal insurance
Boat insurance in Raleigh, NC
Enjoy the water with fewer worries.
What it is
Boats and personal watercraft carry real financial risk, from hull damage to liability for injuries. A watercraft policy protects you on and off the water.
Every policy is different, and exact coverage depends on the insurance company and the options you choose. We’ll walk you through the details before you buy.
What we can help you cover
- Physical damage to your boat and equipment
- Liability for injuries and property damage
- Uninsured boater and medical payments options
- Towing, fuel spill and emergency assistance add-ons
Why homeowners coverage falls short for boats
Homeowners policies usually give very limited coverage for boats, often only small, low-horsepower watercraft and a small dollar amount, with little or no liability on the water. A separate boat policy covers the hull, motor, trailer and the liability that comes with operating a vessel.
What a boat policy can include
Physical damage to the boat, motor and trailer, liability for injuries and property damage you cause, uninsured boater coverage, medical payments for passengers, and on-water towing and fuel delivery. Agreed value policies set the payout when the policy is written, while actual cash value policies factor in depreciation.
Personal watercraft such as jet skis, pontoons, bass boats and sailboats can all be covered, though some companies limit high-performance boats.
Boating around the Triangle
Falls Lake, Jordan Lake, Kerr Lake and Lake Wheeler keep Triangle boaters busy, and many families trailer down to the coast in summer. Motorized vessels must be registered with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, and operators born on or after January 1, 1988 need to complete an approved boating education course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or more.
Tell us where you boat and store the boat. Coastal use, hurricane haul-out plans and winter storage can all affect coverage and price.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is boat insurance required in North Carolina?
State law does not generally require it, but lenders and many marinas do. Even without a requirement, liability coverage protects you if you injure someone or damage another boat or dock.
Does boat insurance cover the trailer?
Many boat policies include or offer trailer coverage. We confirm it is listed so a damaged or stolen trailer is not left out.
What does Watercraft Insurance typically cover?
Boats and personal watercraft carry real financial risk, from hull damage to liability for injuries. A watercraft policy protects you on and off the water. Exact limits, deductibles and exclusions depend on the policy and the insurance company, so we review the details with you before you buy.
Do you only insure people in Raleigh or North Carolina?
Our office is in North Raleigh, and we work with neighbors across the Triangle every day. As an independent agency we also help clients nationwide when we have markets that fit.
How do I get a quote for watercraft coverage?
Start the quick quote form on this page, call or text our office, or request a quote online. An advisor reviews every request and follows up — usually within one business day.
Will you compare more than one insurance company?
Yes. Shadow Lake is an independent agency, so we shop multiple top-rated carriers for you instead of selling a single brand. Availability depends on the coverage, your location and underwriting.
Is flood damage included in a standard homeowners policy?
Usually not. Most homeowners and renters policies exclude flood. If you need flood coverage in North Carolina or elsewhere, we can help you look at separate flood options.
Can I bundle home and auto?
Often yes. Many households save time and may qualify for multi-policy discounts by placing home and auto with compatible carriers. We’ll tell you what options apply to your situation.
